Promise of Salvation
- Acts 16:31, “So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
God allowed Paul and Silas to be imprisoned in Philippi for a divine purpose and that purpose was to help bring the jailer and his family to salvation. What caught the jailer’s attention was the fact that Paul and Silas were so joyful, praying and singing hymns to God. And when the earthquake hit, freeing the prisoners from their chains, the fact that Paul and Silas chose to stay and encourage the jailer with the Gospel message, made all the difference for the jailer and his family.
This powerful witness set the seed in the jailer’s heart to want to ask the most important question of his life, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Paul and Silas responded with the most profound and powerful promise of God, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
A simple truth but a truth that would forever transform this non-believing jailer and his family into new creations. It would be the start of a new ministry for this jailer and his family. Their immediate response was one of service. They began washing and cleaning the wounds of the disciples and feeding them. They were baptized in the Lord and ultimately their home would become a place for the new believers in Philippi to meet, including Lydia’s group, forming the nucleus of the Philippian church.
As we all know, the Word of God has the power to save by grace through faith alone, in Christ alone and has the power to transform even the most wretched man into a powerful, useable vessel for God’s glory.
Thank You Lord for saving us!
