Promise of Salvation

  • Romans 5:1 NKJV, "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
The promise found in Romans 5:1 is the promise of salvation that results in peace with God. Today’s promise reminds us of one of the greatest gifts God gives His children. Peace with God.

One of my favorite scenes from the movie Forrest Gump is when Lt. Dan and Forrest Gump are caught in a storm in the middle of the sea. As the storm is raging, Lt. Dan is yelling at God as venting all the bottled-up years of anger and resentment. The next morning after the storm passed, Lt. Dan has a look of peace on his face. He plunges himself into the water and takes a relaxing swim. Forrest watches and comments, “I guess Lt. Dan made his peace with God.”

This peace is not something we earn by being good enough or doing religious works. It comes because we have been justified by faith. To be justified means "Just as if I never sinned." God declares us righteous because of what Jesus did for us.

Before salvation, sin separated us from God. When we place our faith in Christ, God no longer sees us as enemies, but as forgiven and accepted. This is why the verse says “we have peace with God.”

This is truly a promise from God because it depends on His work, not ours. God promised that whoever believes in His Son would be saved, and He always keeps His promises. Jesus paid the full price for our sin, and nothing needs to be added to His finished work.

Some days we may feel unworthy, angry, or discouraged like Lt. Dan, but God’s Word says we have peace with Him. We are forgiven. We are accepted. We have peace with God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
