Promise of God - Jesus is our Savior
  • Luke 1:46-47, “And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."
Music is powerful. It has the ability to bring a memory. It can cause us to dance, or we can even get pumped up (if it’s some metal!!); sometimes it can even cause sadness. There are some musicians who have ghost writers (when someone else writes the song) but there are some talented musicians that can write the song, and also sing the song. There is something different when the musician has written the lyrics to the song that they’re singing. The passion in the music can cause goose pumps when listening to the song.

In our verse above, Mary is writing a song; not just any song but a song about her Savior who has become human flesh. Her baby boy would deliver her and the world from their sins. In her song, she writes “My soul magnifies the Lord.” She uses the Greek word “μεγαλύνω (megalynō)” meaning “to make great, magnify, to make conspicuous, to deem or declare great, to esteem highly, to extol, laud, celebrate, to get glory and praise.”

Mary expresses “my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” Here Mary uses the Greek word “ἀγαλλιάω (agalliaō)” meaning “to exult, rejoice exceedingly, be exceeding glad.” Mary was told earlier in Luke 1 by the angel Gabriel all the things that were going to happened to her regarding her virgin birth of the Messiah. (Luke 1:28; Luke 1:31-32)

It’s encouraging to read the lyrics Mary writes in Luke 1:46-55. It's a beautiful song of praise. Like Mary, we can hold unto His promises, magnify, celebrate, rejoice, and be exceedingly glad that Jesus is our Savior.

Luke 1:49-50, “For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him, From generation to generation.
