Ephesians 5:19, "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord."
As I think about this verse it reminds me of a musical and how instead of talking maybe we go around mostly singing to ourselves and each other. Even just for a day maybe we could try it and see how it turns out. I’m sure it would put a lot of smiles on people's faces and you’d probably get some odd looks too. My wife and I have seen so many musicals that we often say “I feel a song coming on,” and then we both laugh.
With all the negative news and the very serious challenges we face these days, it’s easy to get down and forget to encourage yourself and others, by being thankful and singing praises to the Lord. The music we hear and the songs we sing can be a very powerful tool to soothe your heart and mind. In 1 Samuel 16:14-23, the Lord used David’s harp playing to banish an evil spirit and calm King Saul.
Focusing on the power of praise and developing godly playlists, reminds me that it’s very difficult to keep a bad attitude or stay in a bad mood when you’re praising the Lord and making melody in your heart. Just as in David’s time the evil spirits and your "stinkin thinkin" will be banished if you’ll take the time to honor the Lord through worship and be an example to others.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of song and the power of praise. Help us to lift our eyes and our voices to you in thanksgiving.
Amen
