Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Most of you know the story, David the King, the man who is known as, “The Man after God’s Own Heart,” fell hard! Not only did he sin by sleeping with a woman who wasn’t his wife, the woman he fell with, was somebody else’s wife. To make matters worse, he lied, and eventually committed murder to cover it up. By my count, David was a fornicator, adulterer, lying, murderer.
We all know there’s a high cost of sin. Not only does it affect us, but it also affects those we love. It tarnishes our witness to a dying world, and ultimately it breaks and separates us from God’s heart.
Yet David knew two things.
He knew the heart of the matter was the matter of the heart. Wiersbe wrote, “David knew that the inner person—the heart—was the source of his trouble.” We aren’t sinners because we sin, we sin because we’re sinners. We are incapable of changing that in ourselves. David asked God to create in him a clean heart.
The second thing (or better yet Person) David knew was the merciful & gracious God. David knew that his sin would lead him to hell. So he cried out for mercy, "Create in me a clean heart." He also knew that in himself he couldn't change. So he asked the Lord for His heart; a steadfast one. Not only to help him have victory over sin but also to help him hold on to God when he didn't.
God sent His Son to pay for every missed mark. Wisdom is calling out to us to learn from David. May we know sin’s heavy consequences, and may we ask for a steadfast heart to keep following hard after the ways of God. But may we also know that in Jesus there is mercy. All we have to do is acknowledge our need of Him, come to genuine repentance, and call on His Name!
