Proverbs 18:2, "A fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart."

Have you ever noticed sometimes when you’re talking in a group or even one on one that some people can’t wait for you to stop talking so that they can say whatever is on their mind? Often a person like that will even interrupt because they can’t wait for you to finish your sentence. I’ve done that a lot to people at work, at church, and even at home.

I try to catch myself by saying “let them finish and don’t interrupt.” You might just learn something. My marriage counselor told me “If you’re doing anything other than listening then you’re not really listening.” The Lord has shown me there’s great value in not being concerned about what you have to say and instead try to focus on really listening to the other person, and being genuine and intentional about your response.

My uncle and I were swapping stories about giving advice to our children and he told me how he came up with the perfect set of words that he was sure would open his daughter’s heart and mind and be the key to setting her on the right path.

When he finished talking and was waiting to hear her response, she looked down at her arm and then looked back up and my uncle and asked, “What do you think of my tan?” He said his mouth dropped open and his head almost exploded. She was acting like a fool and didn’t even know it.

One of my sons recently told me I don’t even know him, and it was very shocking to hear. My heart sank with the realization that I’m not really listening to him and proving that I’m truly interested in him.

Lord help us to reach out, to restore and rebuild relationships; to truly listen and learn.
Amen

Your brother in Christ,
- Sean
