Jonah 3:9, "Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?"

These were the words of the king of Nineveh after he heard the message of God through the prophet Jonah.  It says in the book of Jonah chapter 3 that he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes (v.6).  He made a decree that neither man nor beast would taste anything but would cry mightily to God and asked everyone to turn from his evil way.

In the scriptures, we do not have in detail the message of Jonah to the people of Nineveh. We do know that it was a message of repentance and of God’s coming judgment to the sinful city.

In the king's words back in verse 9, it seems to me that he did not know the complete message of repentance.  A couple of scriptures that came to mind concerning the kings' concern of perishing…

2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

1 Timothy 2:4, "...who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."

From studying the book of Jonah we know that the prophet wasn’t completely in tune with the heart of God for the people of Nineveh.  The scriptures say that Jonah was flat out displeased with God's mercy on the people.  I’m not sure if it has to do with everything that is currently happening in this world but I have certainly (in honesty) looked forward to the coming judgment of God upon people.  May our hearts also be full of God's mercy and love for “all” the world.

Your brother in Christ,
- Rich
