1 Kings 3:13, "And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days."
God is so great! When Solomon acknowledged his inexperience and asked God for an understanding heart so he can discern between good and evil. God was pleased, so pleased He gave him extra blessings. Blessings Solomon didn’t ask for. This is an example of God’s kindness when presented with selflessness. He rewards it greatly.
We ask God for many things. But how often do we ask with selfless hearts, thinking of others, putting ourselves last or completely out of the picture? God wants us to seek Him, choose Him over evil and wickedness. But we must do so willingly, submissively and with an open heart to receive Him.
Solomon was already king, reigning over Israel, and realized he was incapable of being king on his own. God revealed Himself to Solomon in a dream and asked “What shall I give you?” Solomon described himself as being like a child, humbling himself to God. This is what we must do when seeking God, realize how flawed and broken we are. Only to be blessed as God sees fit, within His will and perfect timing.
