1 John 4:1, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
We are living in days where it seems like deception is on the rise like never before. We are constantly being bombarded with information, literally at our fingertips. With all this information we must test all things.
1 Thessalonians 5:21, "Test all things; hold fast what is good."
When you read the latest headline what do you do with it? How many times have we taken in information and didn’t test to see whether or not it’s true or false? Or what if someone came up to us and said, “the Lord told me to tell you…” Now there is the gift of the word of knowledge or prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) so we don’t despise prophecy (1 Thess. 5:20) but we must test everything.
John writes this letter to all believers, letting them/us know God is love, light, and life. John encourages us to “test the spirits, whether they are of God.” The enemy is so crafty and an excellent liar, he can’t speak truth (John 8:44). He’s a deceiver 2 Corinthians 11:14 and no wonder, for Satan transforms himself into an angel of light. We can even deceive ourselves (Jeremiahs 17:9), by our emotions.
This is why we must be in the Word, to hear the Shepherd’s voice (John 10:27). John says the reasoning for testing the spirits is “because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Let’s ask the Lord to give us discernment as we live in the last of the last days. Jesus is coming quickly.
