Daniel 6:10, "Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days."

King Darius had put in place a decree that no one could petition any other god except the King.  We know that this was a plot against Daniel, as the other leaders were jealous of Daniel.  Some may say what was the big deal, after all, wasn’t he obligated to obey the King? Doesn’t the bible tell us to obey the authorities that are placed over us?

Yes, the bible does say to obey the government, but not when they go against God.  The example shown to us is clear, Daniel continued as always honoring God before man.  He knew that death was the punishment for disobeying the King.  Daniel did not see the problem as a choice, he saw that he only had one choice, to honor God.

As we can see the world is in a rebellion against God. The psalmist wrote in Psalm 2:2, "The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed…"

I wonder what Daniel was praying about knowing that he was violating the decree. Perhaps he prayed for boldness, encouragement, protection. Perhaps he prayed that God’s will be done in his life.  I find myself praying for these very things as the challenges continue to mount.

As the times are changing quickly against Christians around the world and our future seems to be uncertain.  We don’t know what tomorrow holds, but we do know WHO holds tomorrow.

Your brother in Christ,
Abel
